Change is inevitable in any natural setting, and for it to occur there must be an ignition cause behind channeled at something or someone; that will hence lead to a difference. Change means the act of making a significant difference that alters the original identity of something or substitutes that original thing with another. Change might also mean a transitional stage whereby someone, a certain subject passes from one phase to another with, or without altering their original identity; in another perspective this might also mean an alteration in an individual’s principles and countenance (Salerno & Brock, 2008).

On the other hand, change does not only mean a difference but may also signify the transfer of locations of something; that will mean change has occurred in relation to location. Therefore, change encompasses alteration, variation or modification of a phenomenon or someone that results in considerable difference; of status, principles, behavior, location and even ideology. Additionally, change may mean embarking on a new chapter in one’s life, career or the growth of an organization; that involves the implementation of new measures different from the original ones. The occurrence of change can be either positive or negative depending on the causal factor that influenced the change; therefore this paper aims to analyze the concept of change, its occurrence in the field of nursing and other disciplines; considering the difference in change scenarios between nursing and any other discipline.

Nursing, both as a profession and a social practice categorized under the field of medicine, has long adapted the traditional forms of medicine and survived the face of modernity and change; although even in the traditional era when change did not exist nursing could still be identified. The nursing profession has changed in the last five decades due to the rapid change and evolution in the world of medicine (Cowen &Moorhead, 2011). Over the years, the number of registered nurses has reduced tremendously because of the countless retirements in the field of nursing and the changing role of nurses; from mere health givers to full time advocators of patients’ rights and caregivers. Secondly, the function of the nurses has changed and developed in a way that even the elderly now have specialized nurses to take of them due to change and advancement in nursing care and health systems all over the world (Kotter, 1996).

On the other hand, the ancient nursing care give to people in remote areas has tremendously undergone change to improved community based projects; aimed at prevention rather than the cure that sometimes fails. Following the constant occurrence of natural disaster such as earthquakes and floods, the nursing sector has changed remarkably in its treatment and health care provision approach by involvement of counseling services and advanced trauma care using modern technology. Additionally, the department has changed the specialization and functions of its nurses by including Acute Care Nurse Practitioners (Cowen & Moorhead, 2011); who specifically train in providing quality care top critical patients in the Intensive Care Units. The constant wave of change keeps expanding as observed in the procedural and advanced care given to patients in hospitals nowadays; the nurses are more involved in patients’ welfare. They study their patients’ medical history, examine, monitor and even assist in administration of treatment when the doctors are fully booked. The concept of change evident in the advanced genetic nursing has seen gene therapy used positively in changing certain medical conditions; that apparently had no cure in the past (Cummings & Worley, 2009).

For example, an evident scenario displaying change in the nursing field emerges in the maternal and child health nursing care given to expectant mothers in the present world. Instead of just distributing educational material and giving pregnant mothers the prenatal care, nurses’ venture more in mother and child care interventions that  into educating women about issues right from menstruation, conception, health pregnancy, child birth and caring for the good health of their babies. Thus, following such interventions changes in nursing for H IV expectant mothers has changed; whereby such mothers are now included on the free antiretroviral programs that ensure they do not infect their unborn babies. Additionally, after birth child health nursing has changed by the introduction of alternative ways of feeding the newborns instead of breast milk form mothers who already had the HIV before the birth of their babies (Pillitteri, 2007).

The change phenomenon occurs commonly in other fields and many professionals have managed to source out ways of positively dealing with change; to benefit them in their different areas of expertise. For example in the field of education, change has become the pivot point key to the educational discourse; in that everywhere in the world we constantly see innovation and changing approaches to education regarding the methods of teaching, school governance, educational evaluation, inspection and school financing systems (Schnotz & Carretero, 1999). Although, change is not uniform in the field of education, evidence of change stands out in the learning approaches applied by educationists in most institutions presently. The agents of change apply various techniques in coming up with change. This makes it vary depending on the teachers and the administration in an institution. If the people in charge are proactive, then the changes are always made within the institution hence there is an aspect of dynamism.

Differing from the past use of blackboards to teach and textbooks, learning has changed tremendously to include the use of projectors in class, backed up by the introduction of e-learning and even online assessments and exam evaluations. Analyzing this phenomenon in other disciplines, change does not differ by a large margin in other areas compared to nursing (Ellis & Hartley, 2008). Just as inevitable as the phenomenon is in nursing the occurrence stands out vividly in other disciplines; observable in their organizational cultures, systems of management, policies, methods of behavior and social approaches and the roles of the different professionals in those disciplines.

For instance, change in the education system, ancient education where people only went through informal learning has changed to formal learning using advanced technology. The change in learning approaches using the internet as a source of knowledge and research has build the outcome seen in the quality education offered to students. Change in this field is spread whereby the teachers use the e-learning system to teach, assess students, do grading and even evaluate their final exams. This basic model ensures that the people being transformed are well equipped to sustain the change. The continuity is critical than solving the current problems only. People have to ensure that the change aspect should be passed on to generations and acts that promote innovation should be enhanced. Hence, the outcome of change in the education field has led to the emergence of independent and highly educated individuals ready to venture into the world, and add value to people’s lives. There exist vast antecedents that define the criteria of change in this phenomenon and subsequently influence the outcomes. The table below identifies the antecedents, the defining criteria and the outcomes.

The concept of change takes place through a process based on the specificity and the complexity of change; considering the preselected activities and roles of the people who come face to face with the change (Vosniadou, 2008). Change has a model that facilitates its accuracy allowing room for responsibility building and systematic workflow. The originality of an issue may not symbolize its perfection and vice versa, but when change takes place, the difference made to the originality of issue or a given field; contributes in building or improving its perfection. The tools that measure the concept of change include the depth of change in the respective disciplines, the systems in place used to dispense services, personnel and their expected roles in the different disciplines and the current measures applied different form the original measures utilized in that field (Salerno & Brock, 2008).

Conclusively, as much as expensive and hard as change, so is the process that follows; the ability to manage change and retain it for the good of the different areas of discipline. The alteration of something originality may not mean the end or stagnation in performance but only a push factors to act and improve the quality of performance, life and productivity.
