Custom Facebook - a Social Network Essay

If just a couple of years ago someone was asked what a social network is, one would be deeply frustrated to answer this question. Currently, social networks captured the minds of global web users, so firmly that it is rather difficult to find someone who, at least, did not hear of such resources. Such sites are more numerous than it may seem, and, naturally, each of them has its pros and cons. Talking about Facebook, what disadvantages and advantages does this social network possess? Undoubtedly, social networks are a new phenomenon which continues to gain popularity among different age groups. Surely, they have positive and negative impacts on our lives. However, a rather drastic change can be observed: human lifestyle, habits and health deteriorate due to their Internet addiction closely connected with social networks such as Facebook.

Positive Impacts of Facebook on Our Lives

From the perspective of users, a big plus of social networks is the ability to find friends, colleagues, co-workers and acquaintances. “To visualize the problem, suppose we agree to represent people as dots, and to connect together with a line any two people who are acquainted”.You may find somebody, and somebody can find you. Undoubtedly in, today's world it is very important to maintain communication with each other, since due to a constant flow of events, cases and concerns it is extremely easy to lose the connection with friends and important people.

Secondly, social networks provide an opportunity to make new acquaintances, and this, in turn, is a chance to find like-minded people with similar interests. It is enough to join the right group, which attracted attention, and the rest is a trick. You can just talk on the network, but who knows, maybe virtual communication will turn into a real one? Thus, a social network is one of new methods to make acquaintance. However, nobody knows whether they will be necessary and useful to you. Social networks allow people to view files, videos and photos of other users, leave comments and send messages. Of course, such communication will never replace a live emotional and open dialogue, but it will help a person to relax, lift mood, or simply to “kill time”.

The Danger of Social Networks

On the one hand, it is not bad. However, on the other - the danger lies in the fact that virtual communication is gradually replacing the real with becoming predominant in a person's life, and this is a significant minus. In particular, this issue affects children and adolescents. The social network is simple and faceless: a person typed a message, sent it and got a response. There are no facial expressions, movements, eye contacts and no real emotions at all. A person who stays in the network for a long time, communicating virtually, without simple human communication, is dependent on a computer and the network itself. He/she loses the habit of real contact with people. This is a direct path to autism. In fact, this is a serious problem in modern society, especially for youth. Gradually, dependence develops and a person does not want to admit it. Visits to different personal pages are becoming a daily ritual. Others seek to add as many “friends” as possible on a bet or just for fun. Undoubtedly, this is useless and pointless, but more and more Internet users are absorbed by such activities.

According to British scientists, social networks can harm health by decreasing contact with real people. The results of investigations of the influence of sites like Facebook to health warn against overuse of the Internet sites since they increasingly replace contacts with human beings. The scientists claim that a lack of communication may adversely affect the operation of the immune system, hormonal balance, the work of the arteries and thinking processes. In the long term, these facts increase the risk of the emergence and development of various diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease and dementia.

Besides, people often become inconclusive and unjustified spending free time in front of a computer. Young people become irritable and withdrawn if a computer is not at hand, there are misunderstandings and conflicts with parents which naturally affect the mental health of a child and his/her relationships with others. This addiction to virtual communication by teenagers is understandable – on a web nobody forces to communicate with an unpleasant companion, no one reads messages and does not teach morality. If one is tired of a chat – he/she just closes it. In a real life – it is not so simple.

Finally, social networking is not beneficial to the development of thinking and behaviour of teenagers. Frequently, Facebook, as an example, has a lot of harmful content. Availability of information makes the younger generation vulnerable to such dangerous things as cyber bullying and video clips. Viewing harmful content can have very adverse effects on a child. Parents should monitor the activities of their children on the Internet, teach them the importance of privacy and proper use of social networks and the Internet in general. Apart from this, parents need to teach young people time management and how to develop their organizational skills.

Such information and communication resources, of course, have a great future. A year after a year, social networking is becoming bigger, expanding the boundaries of their actions and opening up new possibilities. However, everything has to have a limit. People are real, not robots. This kind of communication attracts and arouses interest. However, a real life, with its open arms, smiles, pats on a shoulder, strong handshakes and kisses should never be replaced by any, even the most popular social network.
