Free Example of Four Pieces of Artwork Essay

In Gabo’s work, one sees some kind of a sculpture constructed using great architecture. It appears that a lot of line usage was put in place. Moreover, the base structure shows more stability than the upper structure. On the other hand, the upper structure or piece of art shows more fragility, delicacy and value. Looking at the upper part, one sees a shining art work that is somewhat complicated. The initiation reaction is that of awe and wonder. One is bound to believe that the creator must have been a well-seasoned artist who used expensive and rare material to put up this art piece. Moreover, by closely putting into perspective the intention of the artist, one is faced with two-fold possibilities. The first one appears to have been for mere competition. Secondly, it was perhaps constructed to for handsome pay. These two possibilities converge at the intention that the piece of art was created for another person, perhaps of a higher social status, other than the artist.

In interpreting Gabo’s work, one is met with an immediate sense of prestige. Perhaps the creator of the artwork is passing a message of value, prestige and quality. This piece of work is one that can be used to award people who have attained specific ranks or accomplishments. Moreover, the fact that the fragile and the more valuable part of the art is put on a strong base may mean that success does not just happen. Whoever is awarded the artwork must have built a strong base in perfecting his or her work or skill that earned him or her recognition that is pro rata to the award. If this contemporary artwork emerged several centuries ago, the audience of the time would-perhaps consider it an out-of-this-world creation, perhaps magic.

Normanno Wedge I (Beverly Pepper)

The second piece of art is a photograph of a monument and a building at the background. The monument stands on a circular space in the middle, perhaps, of the compound outside the building. One is made to believe that the building is part of a busy institution or houses a busy organization or company. The sides are also filled with green grass. Although the house at the background is quite large, one is attracted to the monument more than the building. All the viewer of the photograph sees is a sense of stability. Although the upper part of the monument is larger, it is held well and tightly by the lower part, the base. Another reaction one gets is the feeling that the monument is old. This is clearly seen from the base which appears a bit ‘rusty’; meaning that it must have stood there for many years. The intention of the artist was to entrench the philosophy, the core values or the goals of the organizing on whose compound the monument stands.

If the monument represents the institution’s goals, then it means that this goal or philosophy signifies a leading position in the industry which the organization is in. It could also mean that the organization is tasked with a heavy duty but, nevertheless, it is able to handle the duty and mandate. This mandate has been under the institution’s pursuit for many years. Symbolized by the rust at the base, and will continue to be the key agenda for the institution. By focusing on the technique, one could interpret that architecture and art have evolved into disciplines that can manipulate complicated aspects of the modern society. This takes the viewer to the next step in terms of theme. There is no doubt that this kind of architecture may have existed centuries before it is seen today. Although this is not very contemporary, it would definitely have been made using different material several centuries earlier.

South Capitol Street at M Street, Washington DC (Roland Freeman)

This is a photograph that was taken to show the state of South Capitol Street in Washington. Although a very good car is parked outside the houses, the houses, seemingly apartments are ramshackle. At the balcony of the apartments, there are many clothes that are hanged on cloth lines. One also sees that the apartment is surrounded by a wooded fence. Interesting, the clothes are white in color. Most importantly, one of the back tires is deflated; meaning that the car may not be in use any more. There is also a tree that does not have leaves. The initial reaction is wonderment of why such a good car should be parked in such a place. Its status does not mach the status of the estate. There is immense contrast. It is expected that cars of this nature are owned by people living in posh apartments. Apartments occupied by such people are supposed to be fenced by an advanced-material fence; not wooden poles and timber. Perhaps the intention of the photographer was to bring out the theme of poverty. There may have been a period in the lives of the occupants when life was good; when they had cars, but something happened and they could not maintain them.

The above interpretation could also be extrapolated. Freeman must have been aware of the context of his photograph. 1970’s was a time in America when materialism had already gained ground. It was perhaps such a time when reality struck Americans that posh life was not to last forever. Having now settled from war, American artists were eager to bring out the changes in lifestyles in connection with political economy. This theme would resound well with Americans even many centuries before. This is because America has been characterized by socio-economic and political struggles.

Blue Cadillac (Richard Estes)

This is a contemporary art painting of a blue Cadillac. The car appears to be in a parking lot. This is because there are other cars as well. At the back, it looks as if someone has placed a pile of things on it. There is no one in the car. It is not clear whether the person who emerges from the other side of the car was the actual driver of the car, but it is clear that whoever drove the car was responsible for placing the pile at the back. It is also clear that the painting is halfway done. It is further clear that the tone to the color used is very intense. In the contemporary world, the color almost looks as if it were a digital image. The paint must have been applied in plenty. Seeing this painting, there is not much emotion. One is met with emptiness. There is no much technique. But the aspect of light is well portrayed. The intention of the artist was to show the luggage at the back of the Cadillac, perhaps. The artist may also have intended to bring out the theme of desertion. The luggage is deserted or left at the back. Although there are other cars, they may have been left there in the midst of a cold whether: the person in the photograph is heavily dressed.

The fact that the painting does not capture the whole car could mean that the artist was not actually interested in the whole car but only on the luggage that was placed at the back. If indeed the artist was interested in the whole car, he would have drawn the entire vehicle. If the painted was created several centuries ago, most likely it would not have a car but another means of transport such as a horse or a boat. Moreover, through line, light and application of texture, Estes was able to bring out the piece in an excellent manner.
