Custom Organizational Behavior Chapter 16 Essay

Chapter 16 of the book Organizational Behavior 11th Edition deals with Organizational goals and structure (Schermerhorn, Hunt, Osborn, & Uhl-Bien, 2010 p.376). The chapter seeks to identify and therefore, describe the different kinds of organizational goals. This chapter identifies three main organizational goals including societal goals, output goals and system goals. Societal goals are chiefly related to specific contributions an organization makes to the society. Organizations make particular contributions to society and achieve authenticity from these contributions. A societal input centered on a primary recipient may be represented in the organization’s mission statement. As managers reflect on how they will achieve their organization’s mission, many start with a statement of which industry they are in. Organizations have frequently stated output goals by pointing out the kinds of products and services they offer. More so, organizations have system goals to illustrate the settings managers think will bear survival and accomplishment. Growth, flexibility, stability, productivity, harmony, human-resource maintenance and prestige are examples of system goals.

Thematically, this chapter talks about organizational dynamics. The chapter looks at how an organization can be made to perform more efficiently with a specific focus on organizational goals and structure. The chapter describes how organizational goals can improve an organization's performance. In essence, we learn from the chapter that the three organizational goals; societal goal, output goal and system goal are very important when it comes to efficient organizational performance.

In my opinion, this chapter manages to answer the question what are the different types of organizational goals? This chapter goes further and answers the question how can these goals contribute to an organization’s performance? Even though chapter 16 of the book Organizational Behavior gives a detailed description of organizational goals and structure, I think this chapter fails to clearly illustrate how these goals can be of significance to individuals. However, I find the concepts illustrated in this chapter relevant therefore, significant to various organizations.
