Custom Types of Criticism Essay

Criticism is defined as the disapproval judgment of faults, shortcomings and or merits of a work by another person. Although criticism usually implies disapproval, it can sometime mean to just evaluate without finding fault. Criticism is usually meant to provide self-evaluation and self-improvement. Therefore criticism is an opportunity to improve.

There are different types of criticism; traditional criticism, sociological criticism, new criticism, formalistic criticism, psychoanalytic criticism. Traditional criticism is the type of criticism that examines the author’s life; his/her history, influence and allusions are reflected in the work. Everything about his/her background is researched and then traces of his/her experiences are reflected in the work. This type of criticism takes into account the humanist view looking for both the author’s technical skills and the significant content to represent human existence themes. Here expression can be teased out but in overall its outlook is not convincing and is usually strange (Hilcombe J. 2007). Sociological criticism focuses on the society as a whole during the time period of the work. Here, all types of politics is examined; Marxism, feminism, primitivism and the types of oppression and liberation are looked into. In new criticism (formalism), the work is detached from its history and is critically looked from its diction, meaning, imagery, setting, characters, tone and its complex meanings. It therefore does deal with instinct and human nature that are attached to events and beliefs (eHow, inc 2010). Another type is the formalistic (new criticism) that concerns itself with text parts and how they do fit together as a whole hence does not bring any information about the author. They other type of is structuralist criticism. Here the underlying patterns of symmetry are related to writing and are held to be common to all societies, stress is on how the works can better be understood hence enable readers to make sense out of it (Hilcombe J. 2007).

Although all the above types of criticism are valuable in their own ways, I strongly feel that the formalism type of criticism does it for me because it touches on several aspects on the development of a work thus we get to the human nature of the author.
