In my opinion, Allison Schulnik is one of the key living female American visual artists in the field of visual arts. She has played an instrumental role in the promotion of visual arts through her paintings whose subject matter is always concentrated on kittens, flowers, and paintings. This has given her the opportunity to become one of the most renowned female artists currently living in this modern age. Schulnik has remained on the frontline in the promotion of visual arts through continuous presentations at various museums and galleries (Schulnik; Mark Moore Gallery; Mike Weiss Gallery 21).

Looking at Schulnik’s works, one is able to see to a true presentation of visual arts. I am of the opinion that her paintings of clones, flowers, and kittens are highly outstanding because of the colors she uses in their presentation. The artist makes colors appropriately and gives everyone a clear opportunity to draw distinctions among the various types of flowers presented in her painting. The color mixture on her images is always outstanding in the sense that they have the ability to attract anyone to the field of art. The color mixture on her paintings brings out the actual nature of the desired image hence avoiding any sense of confusion in its understanding. Apart from their bright nature, the paintings used by Schulnik are always deep and tend to present an image as if it is stuck on the paint. This makes it clear in the presentation of the intended message. The deep paint makes it difficult for individuals to draw differences between the surface and the images because of their stickiness. One would tend to think that such images were naturally stuck on the surface.

Additionally, it could be noted that Schulnik is a team player when it comes to the field of visual arts. In my opinion, this could be seen from her group presentations at various galleries and museums. Robin Rhode

Rhode is a South African artist and he was born in Cape Town. However, he currently lives in Berlin, Germany where he continues with the promotion of visual arts. His subject matter is always focused on the practices of street culture. This explains why he is always ready to work in public spaces, walls, basketball courts, and the street as his canvas of paintings and drawings (Rhode; Hayward Gallery 30).

In my opinion, Rhode is an excellent representation of visual arts in line with the materials he uses to achieve his paintings. For instance, he uses charcoal, paint, and chalk as the principal materials for making his paintings. All of these materials are easily accessible and are cheap in terms of their prices (Bernier 57). This is a true reflection of what is required in the enhancement of visual arts. Paintings do not always necessary need to be completed with expensive materials. Cheap materials such as charcoal could still be used to achieve the best possible presentations of the everyday life in the world. This is also an encouraging gesture that could motivate most individuals to join the field of visual arts. In addition, the use of cheap materials is indicative of the view that visual arts could still be attractive and appreciated in their cheap nature. Therefore, Rhode sends a positive gesture about visual arts when he uses cheaply available materials such as chalk and charcoal.

More so, Rhode works are always simple and clear in their nature. He has always been determined to give the best paintings that are simple in nature and easily understandable among individuals. They capture the essence of street life and present it as it should be without any form of complications of the part of the art. His works give a clear indication of poverty and high levels of inequality in South Africa. Individuals studying artist’s paintings are able to develop and understand the message being passed across without necessarily having to delve into other complex conclusions. This indicates his commitment to using visual arts to give the true picture of society in a clear and understandable manner. The transformation of the complex picture of social living into simple images on the streets is vital in indicating his mastery and professionalism in the area of visual arts. Rhode wants everyone to understand the social happenings in the South African society without any difficulty. Therefore, the continuous drawings on streets emphasize his daily desire of ensuring the growth of visual arts and their role in bringing out the true picture of the society.

Rhode has also been able to take part in performances that enhance the growth of visual arts. One of the most memorable performances by Rhode was the Car Theft where he comes out as a hooded character in street clothes, and draws a car on the wall (Rhode; Hayward Gallery 77). His close associations with such performances are an indication of his vision of using art as a means of approaching and reflecting on it as a multidisciplinary practice that goes beyond the stated borders of genres and the traditional forms of art. In the exercise of his professional career, Rhode continues to engage in numerous solo and group exhibitions that promote visual arts around the world. He has been able to work with a combination of other artists from around the globe, hence, promoting the growth of the new visual art movement around the world. In my view, this is indicative of his desire to go international and take visual arts to an international level. He is dedicated to ensuring that the whole world learns about the new forms of arts that involve their audience in presentations and exhibitions. Some of his international exhibitions have taken place at major institutions such as the Perry Rubenstein Gallery in New York (Crowther 38). This highlights the collaboration of visual arts artists at the international level.

Gary Simmons

Simmons is also a renowned visual artist from New York City. His works always entail the use of icons and stereotypes of American popular culture. Therefore, the subject matter of his work is always focused on social experiences that highlight class and race divisions in American society. Simmons is commonly known for his erasure drawings that reflect the societal nature of the American society and the relationships between individuals of different classes and races (Allen and Princenthal 9).

They could be presented on a simple canvas and could still be understood by members of the audience. This illustrates the easy nature of visual arts and the ease of handling them in different settings where a message is to be passed to the audience. They could be still effective in the passage of their message even in instances where cheap canvas is utilized in their presentation. This also shows modern artists involved with visual arts that everything could be simplified for the better of the art and significant passage of the intended message in the society.

Lastly, the drawings, sculptures and sculptures done by Simmons have been exhibited in the U.S. and other parts of the world. In my opinion, this indicates the view that art has been able to be appreciated around the globe. This indicates the importance of art in providing a mirror of the actual happenings in the society. The society has been transformed through such paintings. Simmons is also an American visual artist that has focused on race and class in the American society.
