Custom Animal Cruelty Essay

The school authorities and teachers justify this behavior of animal cruelty and injustice in the name of studies. Their view is that with these dissection experiments students learn about the parts of body of the vertebrate animals. The National Science Teacher’s Association (NSTA) supports including live animals as part of instruction in the K-12 science classroom because observing and working with animals firsthand can spark students' interest in science as well as a general respect for life while reinforcing key concepts as outlined in the National Science Education Standards (NSES).To give them this knowledge thousands of small animals like frogs, cats, pigs etc are slaughtered at the hand of little children of grade levels as low as grade 5.

Instead of teaching children kindness towards the animals it gives them a lesson of cruelty towards animals. These small children do not have a level of maturity to gain much scientific knowledge from the experience except the body parts. But Kenneth Roy, chair of the Science Safety Advisory Board of the National Science Teachers Association, defends animal dissection, by saying that “I would use the example of driving a real car versus a driving simulation on a computer or in a game room machine. The real-time dissection provides awareness to all of the senses — touch especially — texture, form, etc” (Strauss, 2007).

Some more educators justify the use of live dissection in schools like Christopher Perillo a science teacher emphasizes that nothing can duplicate the smell, feel and texture of cutting into a real frog. "It's not the same as the real thing," Perillo said. "To actually cut through the tissue, see how the skin layers feel, the textures, the way the organs look inside the body, I think that can't be duplicated (Dickerscheid, 2008). In the minds of some teachers, dissection provides students with a unique opportunity to observe directly the internal structure of animals while also learning that textbook images do not reflect the variation found in nature (Morrison, 1992).

A 2002 poll by the Humane Society showed that a majority of biology teachers say they believe the real thing is a better educational experience than the virtual alternative. The National Association of Biology Teachers supports the practice of dissection when done for legitimate educational purposes, as does the National Science Teachers Association (Strauss, 2007). Others speak against dissection, emphasizing the negative memories and messages associated with the experience (Shapiro, 1992).

Alternative Measures to adopt

There are many simple and easy to employ alternative methods that would end this injustice to animals at the hand of young children. The purpose behind these animal dissections in the science laboratories is for the student to gain a thorough knowledge about parts of body in the vertebrate animals. Higher level students also study systems of the body like nervous system or breathing process etc. For small children to learn and study these simple processes that are now fully understood by our scientist there is no need to slaughter millions of animals daily. There are many alternate methods available with the advancement in technological field that may be employed to help the student in their studies. Many alternatives to dissection are cleaner and cheaper than dissection, allow students to learn at their own pace, and reduce safety considerations (Anzovin, 1993).

Over 500 state of the art non-animal alternatives to dissection exist today because of high demand from individuals who want to enhance their educational experience without harming animals (The Science bank). Following are some of the alternate methods that can be easily adapted by the school systems to provide knowledge to the children:

1. Use video simulations soft wares

There are many simulation soft wares available nowadays that can replace the animal dissections in the science laboratories. Instead of performing manual dissections, the teacher can provide each student with individual monitors to have them view the simulated model of the animal for interactive exploration. Another form may be the presentation style class with a single computer and projector with the teacher highlighting the model of the animal in a simulated environment. This simulated software is easily available and provide in depth knowledge with interactive environments that provide good understanding for the student. They may provide easy to click interface for detailed analysis of a specific part of the animal with labeled body parts. Examples are Digital Frog 2 which is a computer software that allows dissection studies to be made through video and animation. Another example is Drylab Plus series which covers a number of animals like rat and worms etc.

2. Use models

Instead of live animals their detailed models can also be used as a way of teaching the student about the body parts and functioning of those parts. After dissection students are shown the dead parts of the body that are not working so why cannot these dead parts be replaces by models. Very precise models are available that can contribute to good understanding of the students and serve the purpose of study without sacrificing the lives of many animals.

3. Virtual Dissection

There are many websites on the internet that allow users to perform complete dissections virtually. Such websites give a real effect with all details that a student requires. These virtual dissections can also be a good alternative for live dissections.

4. Alternate method of research

Many children do not usually have an inclination for dissecting animals and often students themselves resist or refuse to perform dissection. This may be due to an aversion to inflicting pain on the animal. Such students are forced to perform dissection by teachers at the stake of their passing the subject to remove the fear of dissection from them. This is really inhuman forcing a person against performing a violent task that the student is resisting. Alternate methods can be adopted like researching the required material from a library as extensive researches are available on the subjects that are usually the purpose of dissection studies.

Effect of these measures

Employing these suggested measures will have a great positive and lasting effect both on the animals as their lives will be saved and also on the students as a violent negative act of dissection shall be removed from their study contributing to positive thinking regarding animals. Following are some of the positive affects that using artificial means for study shall bring:

1. Life of animals saved

Thousands of animals that give their life on the laboratory tables shall remain alive and this slaughter of animal in the name of studies shall end.

2. Purpose of study served

The study shall not be compromised and a better and quality understanding of the animal’s body parts and functions shall be imparted to the students in a more technology oriented manner.

3. Animals respect restored

The respect and well being of the animals that was being demeaned in the eyes of the student shall be restored and these students in their later lives shall evolve to be animal care takers not animal slaughterers.

4. Low cost implementation

Usually the alternative method used for dissection in school is cheaper to implement than the arrangement of animals. Non-animal alternatives to dissection not only benefit animals, but they are also much more cost effective, environmentally safe, and educationally effective than dissecting a once-living animal (The science bank)

5. Healthy environment

Using computer related alternatives to animal dissection also provides a clean and healthy environment for working instead of working in a laboratory which has the stench of dead animals.

Conclusion

From the above discussion we can clearly infer that there are means available to provide quality education to students without making animals a sacrifice. Same goes for all other situations also that there are ways to safeguard animal rights while leading our life in a good way only one has to fine the way that not only help us lead a quality life but we make sure that it is not at the expense of others be it animals or nature.
