Free Example of Ethical Codes Essay

Ethical codes are adopted by organizations to help employees determine between the right and wrong in their line of work. Within the healthcare industry, a code of ethics depicts moral principles, values and beliefs used to guide healthcare professionals in making decisions and choices, while extending medical care and services to the public. Careful thought on ethical implications assists professionals in healthcare make good, right, fair and just choices. Health educators teach the public on behavior that promotes health and wellness. They have the responsibility to develop materials and programs through which they encourage people to make healthier decisions. Physicians, on the other hand, are healthcare providers concerned with promoting, maintaining and restoring the human health. This study examines similarities and differences between the code of ethics for health educators and physicians.


Health educators and physicians’ codes of ethics state that the ultimate responsibility belongs to the public. Health educators and physicians are expected to dedicate their lives to the service of the people ensuring they provide qualified services. In case of conflicts, while delivering services, health educators and physician are obliged to act in the best interest of the patient or the public. Health educators should consider all facts when conflicts among groups, institutions, organizations or agencies arise and give priority to what promotes quality living and wellness based on principles of freedom of choice and self-determination. Conversely, physicians face issues relating to death and dying. In such cases, the physician should place the interest of the patient above family member decisions or distribution of resources. Responsibility to the client also involves observing justice. Both professions expect their employees to provide services to the public and patients, regardless of cultural, ethnic, racial or economic background.

Health educators and physician also have a responsibility to their professions. At all times, physicians and health educators are expected to uphold decent behavior by observing ethical conduct in their work to protect the reputation of their professions. Physicians shall remain honest during their professional interactions and report colleagues deficient in competence and character by engaging in deception and fraud.

Another similarity is that both professions require the respect for privacy and confidentiality. Health educators and physicians should not disclose any information revealed to them by their clients even after the death of that client. Sharing medical records, personal information, diagnosis or prognosis without approval of the patient is prohibited. Particularly for patients living with AIDS, it is vital that privacy and confidentiality be observed to avoid subjecting them to stigmatization at work and in the society. Codes of ethics for both professions also require that they continue their search for knowledge by studying and conducting research, in turn, making this information available to colleagues, patients and the public.


There are differences, however, between two codes of ethics. First, physicians are allowed to choose whom they render their services to except in cases of emergencies. Providing appropriate medical care, physicians can choose who they work with, whom they treat and in which environment they will provide medical care. Health educators have a responsibility for everybody, regardless of who they are or where they come from; they do not choose who they serve. In addition, code of ethics for physicians mandates the respect for law and stipulates that physicians have a responsibility to demand changes in requirements of the law, contrary to the interest of the patient. This is not stated in the code of ethics of health educators.
