Custom Evaluation Plan Essay

Evaluation is an important tool to determine the result of the research. In this study, using comprehensive oral care practice as the primary intervention method in preventing ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is measured by proper evaluation. The author will base its findings on the results coming from the infection control department, interview surveys, and patient chart reviews.

In the course of two years, as the study proposes, the members of the infection prevention team (IPT) should evaluate the 48-month research through patient chart reviews of all patients, who are hooked to a mechanical ventilator, especially those, who are associated with ventilator-associated pneumonia, while admitted in the Intensive Care Unit of White Memorial Medical Center in the same time frame. The consequent findings will be analyzed by the same team. To determine the efficiency of the proposed solution implemented, the members will use evaluation tools in the form of patient chart auditing.

A pre-test (Appendix A) will be used to measure the existing knowledge of the nurses assigned in the same setting as to the standard protocols of oral hygiene care and other nursing care strategies. Afterwards, when the pre-test is done, the team will conduct a series of educational drive to staff nurses of the same subject. The PowerPoint presentation will consists of protocols in patient positioning, ventilator circuit and closed suction catheter changing, replacement of heat-moisture exchange filter, timing of suctioning, giving prophylaxis, inactive weaning and oral hygiene care for mechanically intubated patients. The primary objective of the education campaign is to strengthen the knowledge of the ICU staff nurses in lowering the incidences of VAP in their patients. A post-test will be conducted to measure the efficiency of the educational campaign. Through this, level of learning of staff nurses will be assessed after the implementation of the educational campaign.

A separate standard protocol for oral hygiene care practices will be introduced to the nurses. The guidelines should be followed and included in the nursing care routine done in the ICU. To determine, if the prescribed standards of nursing oral care practices are being followed, the members of the infection prevention team will audit the charts of the patients in the specific time frame of 2 years. The patients’ charts will provide accurate information as to the census of ventricular-associated pneumonia occurred in the study period, the actualization of the recommended oral care hygiene for intubated patients in the ICU, and the consistency of the performance of nurses in preventing VAP via oral care methodologies.

Chart auditing will be divided into the pre-implementation and post-implementation categories. This system of auditing will help the infection prevention team members and the ICU nursing staff to comprehend better the results of the methodologies implemented. The impact of the educational campaign and the effectiveness of proper oral care in the prevention of ventricular-associated pneumonia will be clearly established.

The findings of the study will be assessed by the nursing research committee and quality control department. The recommended standard protocols and suggested nursing care methods in lowering the incidence of ventricular-associated pneumonia indicated by the proposed study are subjected for improvements under the careful evaluation of the aforementioned committees. The outcome of the review conducted by the nursing research and quality control committees will be forwarded to the infection prevention team members. Regular staff and outcome evaluation of will be included in their monthly meeting discussion.

The purpose of the evaluation plan is to help the proposed study to become an evidence based practice. Also, it provides the study a specific direction, giving absolute answers to questions: Is the study successful or not? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the study? What are the necessary changes to make to increase the effectiveness of the study? The outcome of the evaluation will also help to indicate the areas of strengths and weaknesses of the proposed study. The documented weaknesses in the present study shall be subjected for improvement in the future studies.
