The purpose of this letter is to explain how Montag was able to solve the problem of shortage of nurses in America by introducing the ADN program. She was also able to differentiate the functions of nurses by ensuring that the nurse’s curriculum produced nurses who had diverse skills. Before her contributions, theory was not focused on nurses’ curriculum. This produced nurses who had insufficient academic knowledge on nursing field. Mildred Montag has contributed significantly to the evolution of nursing education. After the end of the World War II, a shortage of nurses in America occurred. The shortage of nurses occurred because of increase in the life expectancy of the American citizens. In addition, the tasks that nurses were supposed to perform became more complex. Dr. Mildred Montag suggested that one of the important strategies that the National Nursing and Accrediting Services would adopt in order to solve the nursing shortage problem was shortening the educational period of nurses. In her dissertation, she proposed that nurses had to undergo a two-year program in both community and junior colleges. After undergoing this program, the nurses would become graduates having associate degrees. This would automatically grant them qualifications of taking a test for RN licensure. They would also have practice as technical nurses.

Montag was also very instrumental in the differentiation of the roles that nurses performed in their professional setting. She believed that the differentiated roles that the nurses performed were to depend significantly on the educational background that the nurses had. She argued that they could either function as a nurse’s aide or as a professional nurse (Matthias, 2010). Nurse’s aide performed functions that were semiprofessional in nature and limited in scope. In addition, the tasks that they performed were mostly routine and repetitive. Contrast to this, the professional nurse was supposed to supervise how nurse’s aide performed their functions. Since the nursing practice was increasing in its complexity, differentiation of roles would help in ensuring that each nurse performed his/her duties well. The quality of patient care improved because of this.

Montag also introduced the Associate Degree Nurse program. The program was successful, since research conducted on this program revealed that its graduates performed the duties of staff nurses comfortably. In addition, head nurses claimed that these nurses were able to perform their duties better than or as good as students who graduated from other nursing programs (Matthias, 2010). The students who took the licensure examination tests after completing the Associate Degree Nurse program also passed with higher marks compared to the students who did baccalaureate and diplomas in nursing. This shows that the program that Montag introduced produced competent nurses.

Before Montag introduced the ADN program, theory taught in nursing curriculum was inadequate. According to research, the percentage of theory in educational curriculum of most medical training schools was about 2. Due to this, the trained nurses had insufficient knowledge in the areas of nutrition, hygiene and anatomy. However, the students studying ADN were able to learn both theory and practice of nursing. It was taught in junior colleges and technical institutes. Montag also helped in ensuring that the trained nurses acquired skills of interacting with the public. This would help the nurses knowing the common community healthcare problems.

Overall, Mildred Montag transformed the nursing education system. She was able to shorten the education period of nurses. It helped in solving the problem of nurse’s shortage that occurred after World War II. She was also able to differentiate the role of nurses leading to improved patient care and patient satisfaction. She also introduced the ADN program that improved the competence of nurses. Her program also increased theory in the nursing curriculum in addition to involving nurses in community activities.
