Rationale statement
In formulating the scope and the sequence for this textbook, care has been taken to ensure that all the critical features and stories in the past history have been included. The book has been designed to ensure that students and their teachers using the book have the flow of the historical happenings since the first available materials on the earliest forms of civilization were recorded to the modern forms and ideas of civilization. It is expected to help students know their world history as well as assist them pass their exams (Brown J.).
The table of contents contains a chronological order on the world civilizations. There are eight topics each dealing with the chronological eras from the ancient and earliest forms of civilizations to the most recent times in history. The topics here have each been given priority because of their processes and we have emphasized sociocultural and economic affairs but deliberately minimizing on short term phenomenon. In terms of the space allocated, we first emphasized more on how the first forms of history developed and we have also emphasized on the more recent development epochs in history keeping in mind the ever growing global interdependence of nations and the cultural impacts (Brown J.).
After the introduction to history of the world civilization, we then look at the first forms of civilization at Mesopotamia, Egypt, China and India when humans were first successful in nature adaption to their needs. Then we examine the history of Romans and the rise of Islam then move to the 18th century when Europe led the world in almost everything in military, science, trade and colonization. Moving to the 19th and 20th century, we examine how power swings to outside Europe in the maritime empires. We conclude by examining the current forms of civilization in the current world on a foundation of western science and technology (Brown J.).
Development of key themes
An important feature of the book history of world civilizations is its division to short 8 chapters each with a scope to either two to three lectures. Each of these 8 chapters offers thematic boxes divided to key themes being discussed. These are; economy and society, law and government, religious believe, science and technology and arts and culture. At the end of each of these chapters we have included a test exam on the above themes to test the students understanding of each topic (Fleming G.).
