Online or distance learning is a kind of distributed education style that uses pedagogical tools enabled by Internet and web-based technologies to make learning easier and knowledgeable through meaningful action and communication.

While many people agree that online learning has gone through various tests and confirmations successfully over time and opened new opportunities in the field of education, many are still questioning the relevance of learning through non-traditional means. Online education has become one of the major resources for students and professionals alike. Today, online learning and other forms of communication on the Internet have become established norms for schools and many professional institutions.

The popularity of online learning is increasing and online-based classes are becoming an integral part of the trend.  According to the Sloan survey report, the overall higher education online student enrollments for fall 2006 are 4.8 million, which is 9.7 percent more over the previous year. As compared to the 2002 report, the compound annual growth rate in 2006 is almost 21.5 percent (Seaman, 2007). However, according to campus technology news report, nearly 12 million post-secondary students in the United States take some or all of online classes online. But the data might reach more than 22 million in the coming five years time. By the end of 2014, only 5.14 million students will take their courses in a physical classroom, while 3.55 million will take all their classes online and 18.65 million will take some of the courses online, as forecasted by the Ambient Insight Chief Research Officer Sam S. Adkins (Nagel, 2009).

Online learning has many advantages and disadvantages (D, 2006). The advantages appear to outweigh the disadvantages by a significant margin. Each person has got different perception about online learning and it may not be the best option for everyone but a large section of the population especially working professionals find that learning in an online format makes earning a degree easier and faster. On the other hand, school and college students also find online learning environment quite effective, as they can access materials, interact with instructors and also discuss various issues through forum discussion.

In today’s fast moving globalized society, many students and professionals seem to be pleased about the benefits of international courses and the prospect to work collaboratively and closely with colleagues across the world, and to have access to the course instructor and experts from other leading institutions on the web.
