Free Example of Teaching English Vocabulary Essay

The present stage of the development of society is characterized by the unprecedented development and strengthening of the influence of mass media which form the global culture and global information space. The media culture turned into an integral component of the professional and private life of each member of society. The strengthening of the value of mass media in people’s life leads to global changes in the ways of obtaining information and experience.

There is the influence of new media on the research character of communication, releasing them from many hypotheses, paradigms, and scientific methods of the past. The linear models of communication should give the way to the convergent models of communication as to the bilateral process of information exchange due to the interactivity of new media. This interactivity means that instead of more standardized content of printing and broadcasting communication of the past the most various content is transferred. Not only new theoretical models of communication but also alternative media of gathering and analysis of data appear under the influence of the new communicative technologies.

In this context, the special urgency is got by a problem of formation of media competent members of the society capable adequately to cooperate with the flows of information, critically perceive and interpret the new media in the whole variety of their forms. The usage of new media in teaching foreign languages plays a very important role.

The object of the research is the usage of new media during Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL).

The subject of the research is the advantages of the usage of new media in TEFL.

The aims of the research are the theoretical feasibility of the advantages of the usage of the new media in TEFL and the determination of their role in teaching the English language.

In order to achieve the aims, it is necessary to fulfill the following tasks of the research:

  1. To analyze the state of the research problem in pedagogical and methodological literature;
  2. To define the advantages of the usage of new media in TEFL.

Literature Review

First of all, it is necessary to give the definition of “new media”.

New media compose the term, which started to be used at the end of the 20th century for the interactive electronic editions and new forms of communication with consumers for the determination of differences from the traditional media, such as newspapers. This term designates the development of digital, network technologies, and communications. New media include, first of all, digital technologies, and these tendencies are connected with social computerization. Interactivity is the main component of new media. Social networking is also included in new media. Such social networks as Facebook and Twitter, as well as the project Wikipedia, represent new media.

An application of new media in teaching English promotes the development of educational and research skills, memory, observation, and attention of students; it increases their educational and informative activities and strengthens motivation to study.

Media educational technologies are those that apply new media for the achievement of pedagogical purposes. These technologies allow changing the orientation, structure, and nature of the teaching of the language material. Media educational technologies can be both information sources and the means of didactic information, or means of training material. Media texts, audiovisual materials, photographs and the Internet resources belong to these technologies.

Having appeared in the nineties the 20th century, the term “media text” quickly extended both in the international academic circles and in the national media discourses. A media text is the work of information or art character created for the broadcasting by mass media. The media text is researched from the position of media linguistics and media psychology. The studying of the media texts of various forms and types is the basis for the formation of the idea of how reality is designed and represented in mass media. The media texts are considered in English in order to be the main means of the formation of English media literacy.

Media texts (news, information analytics, advertising) possess training, educational and developing potentials. They allow supplementing of any training material on any subject, acquainting students with “living language” and the features of the vocabulary use. There are the most widely used syntactic constructions in news and other types of media texts; they can be applied to the studying vocabulary at the English lessons. The students are interested in the interactive activities when they can find the well-known constructions having carried out the research work at the foreign newspapers or magazines. The media texts allow working at the language competence of students better than the other elements of media education. Teaching English on the basis of media texts helps students to broaden horizons, acquire new knowledge, develop different types of thinking (logic, critical, creative), and improve personal culture.

Speaking of the usage of new media in teaching English, it is possible to single out several modern pedagogical lessons based on new media. They are:

  • PPT presentations;
  • Online English Lessons;
  • E-dictionaries and reference books;
  • Computer educational games;
  • Online conferences.

It is necessary to note that new media in foreign languages are actively considered as an authentic source of the important information of linguistic, social and cultural, country study and others, which steadily causes a keen interest of an audience, providing a high level of motivation and involvement of the trainees into the process of educational interaction.

However, it is necessary to provide the conditions for communication, and development of the skills of informal conversation for students to master English as a foreign language. Also, the fact, that modern students live in the world of new media, plays a huge role in the process of teaching English.

New media at the English lessons can serve as the means of training, promoting the development of the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing, and a basis for media education of students. Moreover, new media should be used at the English lessons. The usage of new media occupies a sound position in TEFL course. New media fulfill the function of the technical means, like “teaching aids”, “audiovisuals”, etc. at the English lessons. Thus, for example, the Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) method is widely used in the course of intensive English at the University of Central Florida. This method presupposes an independent work of a student with the computer program while a teacher can see on a monitor what each student is working at, answer his or her question, correct or simply emphasize the committed mistake.

The forms of work with new media at the English lessons include:

  • teaching vocabulary;
  • pronunciation training;
  • training to dialogic and monologic speech;
  • training to write;
  • training to the grammatical phenomena.

The Internet is one of the modern and widely used new media used in TEFL. The Internet resources help to realize a personal-focused approach in the process of learning, provide individualization and differentiation taking into consideration the abilities of children, their level of knowledge, tendencies, etc.

“The internet has a role in relation to every school subject and potentially to learners of whatever ability or age. Many schools offer discrete ICT lessons in which pupils learn a range of skills, mostly technical, and so pupils potentially arrive in English able to use those skills, web page design is a good example.”

The main goal of teaching English as a foreign language is the formation of a communicative competence. The communicative approach means training to communication and formation of the ability to the intercultural interaction; it is the basis of functioning of the Internet. The Internet is not meaningful without communication; it is a multinational, cross-cultural society, which activity is based on the electronic communication of millions of people around the world, speaking at the same time. Its application at the English lessons helps to create the situation of real communication.

The Internet allows development of the ability to find the necessary information, analyze it, choose the main thing and use the chosen for the solution of own projects and creation of a new product, and also develope the skills of self-education, cooperation between students, abilities to work in groups. The Internet also promotes the formation of speech skills and provides a wide range of additional exercises for practicing vocabulary of the English language.

Communicating in a real language environment provided by the Internet students appear in the real life experiences. Being involved in the solution of a wide circle of significant, realistic, interesting and achievable tasks, the students are trained to respond to them spontaneously and adequately; it stimulates the creation of original statements, instead of simple manipulation with the language formulas.

A huge value is given to understanding, transfer of the content and sense of the expression. It motivates learning of the structure and vocabulary of the English language, which serve this purpose. Thus, the attention of students concentrates on the use of forms, and teaching to grammar is carried out indirectly, except pure learning of grammatical rules.

Being an information system, the Internet offers a variety of information and resources for its users. The basic set of services includes:

  • E-mail;
  • Teleconferences;
  • Videoconferences;
  • Ability to post own information;
  • Creation of the homepage and its hosting in Web-server;
  • Access to informational resources and online chatting.

These resources can be widely used at the English language lessons. Mastering of the communicative and intercultural competence is impossible without the communication practice, and the use of the Internet resources at the English lessons is essential; the virtual environment of the Internet allows, leaving beyond the temporary and spatial frameworks, to provide the possibility of authentic communication with real interlocutors on the important subjects for both parties. However, it is impossible to forget that the Internet is only an auxiliary means of training. Moreover, it is necessary to integrate its usage into the process of teaching English.

Teaching English as a Foreign Language by means of new media has both the advantages and shortcomings. On the one hand, the process of learning passes independently, the students work with the most suitable speed, the educational atmosphere is less stressful than in a usual classroom. One of the doubtless advantages of new media is the fact that they are presented in a rather simple form (even for beginners in the computer world); moreover, they provide a compound-complex of information: a text, a sound and a picture.

On the other hand, the researches have found that there are also a number of shortcomings. Thus, according to Lasagabaster and Sierra (2003), the poll conducted among the Hispanic students, studying English, revealed the following defects:

  • Mistakes are corrected without an explanation;
  • There are no various and interesting types of work;
  • It is better to master the informal conversations with a real teacher, instead of a virtual one.

“Making students listen to a podcast just because it is a new medium diminishes any English Language Teaching objective added as an afterthought.  However, if the selected objective is, for example, to encourage self-conscious students to express their opinions, then teachers can consider how to exploit technology to achieve the objective.  It can be achieved through Web-based software learning systems which upgrade student-to-student, as well as student-to-teacher communications”.

The research is a mixed study. It was conducted on the basis of primary and secondary research sources. Both qualitative and quantitative research methods were used while conducting this research. It provided me with an opportunity to come up with suitable information, which is relevant and authentic. It is a research approach in which various methods to collect relevant data are integrated for the purposes of the research.

Primary Sources

The primary sources of data collection that were applied are the review of literary sources and observations. The review of literary sources is an indispensable part of the given research. It is necessary, first of all, for the formulation and specification of the main directions of the research, secondly, for the realization of the research process, and, thirdly, for finding out the researches which have already been carried out in the researched area. The research paper is based on the literary review of the academic resources, analytical reviews and articles.

Another primary research method, which was used during the research of the new media in TEFL, was the method of observations. It presents the most accurate information as it directly answers the research aims and objectives.

Secondary Sources

The information found in the web, in online databases was used, while writing the given research paper about the usage of new media in TEFL. External data sources included information from the sources of the well-known educational websites directed to the teaching of English.

The other widespread variants of the application of new media at the lessons of English as a foreign language are similar to those, which are used in any subject area. The English teachers place the program of the course, the necessary information resources, etc. on the Internet websites. The teachers together with students hold online forums, an exchange of e-mails (diaries, questions-answers, home works)’ students do individual or group PowerPoint presentations.

Such an approach of the integration of new media into the teaching of English as a foreign language helps to achieve the aims of media education connected with the abilities of students to find, prepare, transfer and accept the demanded information; however, such important components of media literacy as the abilities to interpret, analyze, and read media messages, development of critical thinking remain unclaimed.

According to Worsnop (1994), the knowledge, how the new media functions and how we can use it with the maximum advantage, becomes a necessary component of the literacy of a modern person. Besides, the media educational tasks and forms of work stimulate the training of the skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking. Moreover, they develop critical thinking, creative abilities of students and considerably increase an informative interest.

The use of new media is efficient at two stages: the forming of language skills and their mastering. The main advantage of new media is the appearance of foreign patterns in the coherent context of real communication when students see and hear their speech.

The usage of new media favours the realization of the main requirement of the communicative methodology, which is the presentation of the process of acquiring language as the comprehension of alive foreign culture, individualization of the process of teaching and the development of the students’ motives. The next advantage of the usage of new media is a great psychological impact on students.

The exciting of the sight center causes the reorganization of the physiological state of the cerebral cortex. Thus, there is a psychological reaction, which put it to the state of readiness to perceive new information. The bright, dynamic images of new media row remain deep and continuous traces in the student’s memory.

Summing up the research work, I would like to say that the paper fully revealed the put aim and tasks, namely, covered the general characteristics of new media, considered the concept “media text” and its application in TEFL. Moreover, the research paper gave a profound analysis to the usage of the Internet as a new media at English lessons, its advantages in teaching the English vocabulary and overall impact on the learning process.

Thus, the usages of new media in the process of teaching English has a number of essential advantages, such as the development of the individuality of the students, independence of thinking, formation of the creative personality and mastering of the English language.
