Children are nonpermanent in their activities and feelings about those things they are doing. They may like doing something and lose their interest in a while towards it. The process of encouraging children to learn writing is very complicated and needs a creative approach from the teachers’ side. At the elementary school, children like listening to books a lot. They can be highly motivated to practice their writing skills after this. This internal desire can be supported by certain actions. The high qualitative picture books provide good examples of effective writing: the ideas, organization, voice and word choice, the sentence fluency and conventions. When elementary students are being encouraged for a writing practice process, they may achieve better results.

The term “good writing” is applied to the process in the course of which elementary students start practicing their writing skills after reading. This concept of good writing is defined in different ways, but all scholars have agreed on the following. This concept has such major themes: ideas, organization, words and voice choice, sentence fluency and conventions. They have named it as the 6 + 1writing traits. Reading picture books forms literature tastes in a younger generation being not only accurately decoding words but also enjoying reading (Jalongo 1). During the process of reading such picture books children can be fully engaged into the story that makes them highly involved in the plot and tends them to the purposeful writing discussion. Reading in a group can be an effective tool for encouraging kids to have the discussion. Also, this may help to speak about differences and to provoke a conversation that may help children to visualize writing skills used by authors to create a story or a fairy tale.

Ideas are the messages, which make up the content of any story. A clear understanding of ideas helps elementary students to visualize and support the purposeful writing. The picture book should be organized effectively; it also as to include the clear comments to each picture for a good understanding of the main idea. All sentences as well should have a well-organized beginning, the middle and a logical end. Effective organization gives children the purposeful ideas of the author’s writing, the reason when and why the writer has used these words. The words’ choice in any story should include the rich, colorful and precise language, which would engage children into the story. The good word choice develops a wide vocabulary and bright imagination in a younger audience. The sentence fluency is the way that the author drives his readers throughout the whole story. This is the way the story plays to the ears, and not only to the eyes of its readers. With the voice tone the author displays his or her story’s expressions, feelings and convictions, builds his or her own unique style and helps to emotionally engage students into the story. The convictions should be easy and clear as well as grammatically correct as children are learning some new word constructions and rules from the correct sentence structures applied in books. The usage of all these 6+1 tips would lead to the successful writing skills’ development.

“Connecting literature with the trait of ideas” is a good strategy for the writing skills’ development at the elementary school. This strategy involves children into the story even after its reading has finished. With the help of this strategy kids develop their imagination, show their creativity and the personal vision of situation. This technique also allows holding the competition among students and motivating them to write better. Therefore, this strategy helps to develop writing skills quickly and effectively and does not allow students to become bored by their practice classes. This means that ideas, situations and the topic  are changing with every new story.

I think that picture book reading for elementary students is the best way to encourage them being involved into discussion and to help them to use correct words, to find out the main idea of text and to develop their imagination and writing skills. This may be achieved through the discussion; then this passes to drawing and describing the students’ personal vision of this book. The teaching writing strategy for elementary students can be developed according to the 6+1 concept. I think that the teacher’s unique vision of the writing skills’ development, creatively designed writing exercises after the book reading stage, and the personal engagement into this process will lead to the successful writing practice.
