The sustainability and success of an energy/environmental management policy has a lot to do with the leadership that the organization has. The key to choosing exceptional leaders and proper leadership styles lies in understanding the development of leadership and the science behind brilliant leadership. The research into prior cases shows that concerning the development of leaders the best leaders are those who have leadership in their blood. The point is that true leadership develops from in an individual as a result of experiences in life that consequently form a set of convictions. This set of convictions forms a basis for the personality which exudes the ability to gather a following that believes in the same values. A leader who practices authentic leadership should be present in order for the organization to prosper and develop an environmental policy which works well.

The science behind the manner in which leaders operate has led to development of various leadership styles. The current research seeks to differentiate leadership from authority. Evidently, it was discovered that there is leadership in the organizations coming from members who have less authority or ranking than others in an organization. None the less, the quality of leadership in the organization must be by a leader who knows how to encourage cooperation, delegates power and knows how to apply different styles of leadership depending on the situation at hand. The organizations operate by use of people and employees will make the new policies either successful or a failure. This fact means that the method of leadership applied in the application of these policies must lay emphasis on emotional intelligence rather that Intellectual intelligence.

In matters such as conservation, leadership assumes two dimensions. The first dimension is the leadership given by those at the helm of ground-breaking research into the field of conservation and environmental management. The second group of leaders is those who research into the ways of assimilating conservation science into the organization through policies and frameworks that work well.

Implementation Strategy

The depth of application of EMS in an organization all depends on how the top and strategic level perceive the policies. The top management must carry the assimilation and practice of the EMS seriously since they have become a necessary part of any organization’s functions.

A set of international standards forms the framework in which the EMS apply to an organization. These standards are the ISO 14001 EMS. It stipulates the prerequisites for having an EMS in the organization. This ensures that the company is capable of establishing a functional environmental policy (along with the relevant objectives). The organization must also consider the legislation and perceive immediate impacts and future impacts of their environmental practices. The policy prevents audits from taking place in an organization if it lacks an environmental policy. Furthermore, the policy is proof of written commitment by the senior management of their commitment thus ensuring sustainability of the policies. In order for the ISO 14001 to be effective and sustainable, the organization must develop a structure to carry out planning, execution, review and implementation of the policies.

When a company chooses to become compliant to the ISO14001, there are several steps to take. The first one is to do a gap analysis. This involves the organization reviewing the current measures that it has taken with regard to EMS and then comparing that to the requirements that the ISO14001 wants. The next step involves the development of an EMS that fits into the gap identified earlier. The organization then implements the EMS in order to achieve compliance. The organization then appoints a third party registrar who looks at the way in which the company conforms to the ISO 14001. The organization should expect regular audits from the registrar and in case there are any unconformities they must be eliminated in order for the approval of total registration.

Consumers are intensely conscious about the environment and having the accreditation gives the organization the competitive edge to woo even foreign markets. In the process, the country enjoys benefits such as industrial growth. The growth comes in proportion to the increase in job opportunities. The maintenance of the environment in the country despite the industrial development. In the process of making jobs available, the number of poor people in the country reduces. The reduction in poverty levels could lead to a drop in the social vices that are present.

The reduction in the cost of managing the industrial wastes could also be realized with the introduction of the ISO 14001. Proper waste management the organization experiences a reduction in the use of energy leading to a significant reduction in the cost of energy in production processes. The effects of this cost reduction seeps down to the consumers leading to an improved corporate image, improved relations with suppliers (of raw material and your product to the market), good market competition and good customer relations. The organization also experiences improved managerial and operational systems due to adoption of the EMS (ISO 14001).
