Custom Diversity of Coleopterans Essay

Experiment: Is the diversity of coleopterans higher in than the Botany Garden than anywhere else on South Campus

Hypothesis: My hypothesis is that it is likely that the diversity of coleopterans will be higher in the Botany Garden as compared to other regions in the South Campus of the University.

Null Hypothesis: If the data collected in the form of number of insect sightings shows that the number of coleopterans is more in the Botany Garden, then my null hypothesis will be true. If that is not the case and more insects are sighted in the South Campus, then the null hypothesis will be false.

Experiment Design

Visits lasting one hour each will be conducted to the Botany Garden each day for seven days and the observable coleopterans counted and recorded on a piece of paper which will serve as Record 1. At the same hour excursions will be planned to the South Campus in the subsequent week to places where there is likelihood of finding coleopterans, and the number of insects sighted will be counted on each day and recorded to give data which will be labeled as Record 2.

The total number of insects sighted from Record 1 and Record 2 will be counted. Supposing the number of insects sighted for the two categories, the data can then be plotted in the following format by replacing the hypothetical numbers with actual numbers from the collected records.

Hypothetical Data: the following table shows a hypothetical data for the proposed experiment, which will satisfy the criteria for my hypothesis:

Table Showing Hypothetical Data

From the bar graph, it can be shown clearly, in which area more number of coleopterans have been encountered. The same inference can be arrived at by glancing at the total number of insects counted from the two records. If more coleopterans are encountered in the Botany Garden, that will prove my hypothesis. The null hypothesis will be true in that case.
