Custom The Role of Leader in Conflict Essay

When a conflict arises, a leader may use five different methods to handle it which are

  1. Straight Approach: This is said to be the best approach of all the approaches to resolve a conflict. The leader of the team tackles the issue head on. A conflict may be uncomfortable to transact with but it is best that the problems should be seen neutrally and to face them as they stand. If the leader decides to use criticism than that should be helpful to the receiver. This practices used in problem solving are very essential in this method because it leaves with a sense of decision and also because all the issues are brought forward whether big or small.
  2. The Bargaining Approach: Another outstanding practice is the bargaining approach. Normally both of the parties involved in the conflict have a solution but cannot find the common one, so the leader has to come in between and find a negotiation. Normally negotiation involves giving and taking from both the sides so usually both of the parties involved in the conflict do find a common ground but are not fully satisfied.
  3. Team Rules Enforcement: This is another method which can be used but it is better to avoid it because there could be hard feelings for the conflicting parties for the entire team or the team leader. This method is used when a team member does not want to be in the team and follow the rules and even rejects to work with the follow team members. Than only the team rules enforcement can be used and the person should be told to find a team where he or she can work best.
  4. Retreat: This method is to be used when a leader feels that the issue at hand is not big to start off. The leader should simply delay the situations as long as he or she can so that the individual can relax. If the leader is experienced enough and uses this method properly, different incidents can be prevented which may arise.
  5. De-emphasis: In this method when the individuals are in a disagreement, the leader should find the area where the individuals involved may come to an agreement. The leader should make the parties realize that there is an agreement to this solution and both are agreeing to it but because of the heated discussion cannot come to terms. This helps to avoid more heated conversations and the parties may realize what they are doing is not good and they start to agree on a solution. (Stulberg, J. B, 1997).

A natural part of working in a group will result in conflicts to arise. At times it can be a spectacular source of energy among the team and at times it can totally destroy the team. The difference is the team members who are willing to stick to a group and a group leader who understands the situation and willing to do anything to make his team one of the best in the organization.
