Free Example of Media and How It Deceives Essay

Unlike a few centuries ago, when humans would receive first hand information, modern technology has completely transformed everything. In the contemporary society, the media has become the main body for collecting, analyzing and distributing chunks of information around the globe within a very short period of time. It has increased its prominence the other day and the entire population embraces the media as an efficient and reliable channel to learn about what is happening either locally or internationally. Sometimes, the media is also expected to offer advice on business, nutrition and other matters, they often suggest the youth how to behave in different situations and generally enlighten the public. The media has to be an extra cautious saturating too much information distributed to the public, to ensure that whatever is aired is the plain truth. Despite this fact, all the information from the media is normally not accurate and some of it contains lies, deceit and fabrications. In spite of the arguments by quite a large audience, it is strongly believed, that the media is not blameworthy for the lies and deceptions that are sometimes associated with their info.

Human beings are liable to mistakes, misconceptions and self justification for a wrong-done activity. Irrespective of the method that was used to bring them up, human beings will ever find themselves entangled in the bondage of making mistakes either willingly or unwillingly, and hence, the old adage: human is to error. As a matter of fact, the media is comprised of human beings who take charge and control everything that is taking place within. Since almost every human seems to be incapable of neutrality, the media is not also different as it follows the same trend. What the media does is not actually lying, but presenting viewpoints different from the audience to promote their personal agenda. Basically, this is what happens in everyday life and everyone does it, often without recognizing it as something wrong.

Bearing this in mind, the audiences are the ones who can be considered blameworthy, as they ought to sift information, embrace what is crucial and discard what is irrelevant. This follows the obvious notion: what is released by the media contains not only plain facts, but also a lot of personal opinions and life experience of the reporters and journalists. The public should take heed realizing that no one will hand them the plain truth, but they have to determine it for themselves. The fact that human beings are growing lazy is very convenient for the media, they capitalize on this notion and shape their thoughts according to their frame because people are not willing to find their own truth.

In this film, Charles Van Doren is presented as a handsome gentile ready to cheat in order to win. The only challenge was the agitated loser Herbie Stampel. The FBI investigator Dick Goodwin investigates and finds what he was looking for but he encounters the problem of completing what he has already started. Stempel had won $70, 000 in a quiz by getting answers before hand but he was later requested to take a dive and answer a question, that he would have known the answer for even in his sleep, wrongly (Busch, Tank and Limbach p2). After accepting the dive, he is promised to be given a priority on another game show but he never receives that chance. This propels him to go to a grand jury and he reports the matter: investigations are conducted and the results are released to the public.

With this show, something changed among many television viewers: they ceased believing each and every bit that they watched on the television. From the show, it is clear that, though not always most of the things that people watch are plain lies. This confirms that the media attempts sometimes to make good money and earn higher ratings over their competitors. This, however, would not be the case if the public went an extra mile to pursue the truth. However, majority pays less attention to truth but they are rather pleased with properly cooked stories. Marketing the companies’ products also makes people believe in deceptions as the advertisers strive to convince the public to buy their products.

The Truman Show

This is yet another film that explains the influence of the media on the lives of individuals in order to control their lives. The film explains how Christof, the executive producer, has come up with strategies of dissuading Truman from exploration and, hence, discovering his false reality (Hollywood Jesus p2).  He kills his Truman’s father in a storm to dissuade him from going near water, reports and designs many adverts on the dangers of travelling, and features many shows on the TV on the need to remain indoors. This discourages Truman from exploring and discovering the truth about his existence. Though at some extent Christof would be blamed, Truman takes virtually all the blame for submitting himself to be deceived for the fear of advertized threats.

Shattered Glass by Billy Ray

In this film, Stephen Glass is unable to cover his flawed fabrications in virtually all the articles, which he has presented for publication. His colorful writing makes him not only be admired but also be revered by his colleagues. He, however, gets accused of the mistake of an inaccurate report and fired after the notion, that most of his reports featured his personal imagination and desire to please the readers (Wood P1). His colleagues sympathize him after stating that he might have been duped by his respondents, but he gets fired anyway. By the end of the film, the entire staff is forced to apologize for the fictitious publications that they made. From this account, it can be inferred, that sometimes the media plays scapegoat for flaws that they have not committed (Beard p4).


Like earlier mentioned, the media sometimes presents information, which contains some bits of false. Following their quest of outshining their competitors, the media will at times present well-made stories to attract, catch and sustain the loyalty of their consumers. Indeed, it is their constitutional right to tell tales, that they choose as they have freedom of expression: “free press” and not “honest press”. Bearing this in mind, it is upon the public to sort the information provided and decide on what to embrace and what to discard.
