Respiratory MRSA or Methicilin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus is a highly infectious airborne disease. It is caused by a strain of the staph bacteria resistant to beta -lactam antibiotics such as methicilin and penicillin. The two types of the disease are the primary and the secondary MRSA. The bacterium that causes the disease is acquired through inhalation and spreads through coughs and sneezing of an infected person. Some of the symptoms of the disease include nausea, headaches, coughing, muscle aches, red bumps, painful skin, soft tender red skin and boil-like bump, purulent drainage from wound and body cavity and an increase of white blood cell.

The bacteria causing the disease are spread through body fluids and air. A direct skin-to- skin contact with infected person is also another way of the bacteria transmission. Respiratory MRSA is common among children, the elderly, cancer patients, drug-users; people living with severe asthmatics, lupus and HIV/AIDS are vulnerable to contract respiratory MRSA bacteria due to their relatively weak immune system. Health workers who do not use protective gear while attending to infected patient are also vulnerable. People in crowded places are also at risk of being infected. However, the disease can be prevented through maintenance of high levels of hygiene and putting on protective gear when dealing with infected persons, especially in the health facilities.

The disease can be treated if detected and reported for medical attention in time. The secondary type of respiratory MRSA may be treated by draining the boils or pus-swollen parts of the body. The wounds may be cleaned and treated with Chlorohexidine (Hibiclens). Besides, glycopeptides antibiotics such as teicoplanin and vancomycin may be used for treatment. However, in order to help an infected patient, blood pressure medications may be given to the patients to ensure that kidney, liver and heart function properly. Psilocybe semilanceata and cannabinoids from psychedelic mushroom and cannabis plant respectively can also be used to kill and prevent the growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
