A review to the book Where to Go When: The Americas: North, Central, South America and the Caribbean by Joseph Rosendowith a title “Where to Go When, Guidebook to the Hemisphere” that was published by Richard B. Woodward in New York Times on the 21 of November, 2008 is being analyzed. Thus, the idea of this paper is to summarize the article, analyze the audience and provide personal reflection on this written in prose composition.

The author starts the review mentioning the lack of the guidebooks to not very common destinations; thus, it might be useful for travelers. Woodward underlines the advantages of this book saying that it contains useful information for travelers with different preferences (2008). Following the description, the reviewer provides rather deep criticism based on the author’s standards of a perfect traveling guide: correct and logical content, conveniently small size, suitable format, unique information, advice on the best seasons to travel to certain locations, and a “strong point of view” (Woodward 2008). On each of the points the book does not reach the author’s expectations, that is why he suggests “consulting a smarter guide”.

Although the review was published in a newspaper which would normally mean aiming at older people, in fact, it is mainly for youth from the USA and other countries since this periodical is respected worldwide and America is an attractive travel destination for foreigners. First of all, representatives of this age group are the majority of Internet users: whereas the article is online it can be easily accessed. Secondly, the review will be most likely read by the travellers who consider reading the guide. The target age group (24-40 years old) is easy to identify from the critic’s words because Woodward hints that it is for people who are fascinated by traveling and spending time in an active way by calling this book “a guide for dreaming of trips as it is for planning them” and listing the things travelers might find in the book – “nature, romance, active adventure” that are suitable for young people. Furthermore, by listing the ways of spending time in the trips, the author of the critical article appeals to readers’ emotions with the use of pathos bringing up good memories and positive expectations in their minds.

 Moreover, the profile of travelers will be based on them having a middle income or limited budget since rich wanderers will normally worry about the cost and organizing it themselves while the book suggests advice and “estimated cost for two”.

The reviewer expects the readers to be intelligent people who would not like to read “travel-ese gush without a strong point of view”. This is how the author uses logos to appeal to customers’ intellect implying that this book is not smart enough for them; they deserve something better since they are so intelligent.

The layout of the article is quite classical; there is only one picture of the book attached to the critic. It is rather short and does not contain unnecessary information. This way, the review shows its credibility and authority for making expert decisions, which emphasises the use of ethos. It does not allow any thought in readers’ minds that they cannot trust this source. 

I believe that the writer formulated his argument in a very clear way. He provided the detailed explanation and reasons for not choosing this book as a travel guide. The author presented his ideas as a credible source of information that people should rely on. Moreover, Woodward successfully used all three methods (pathos, logos, and ethos) to convince the readers in the validity of his point of view. Therefore, I think that choice of the words, arguments, the media source, and ideas was successful for the target audience.
