There are many popular tourist destinations in the United States that will amaze travelers, but there is no place on earth like Las Vegas.

Las Vegas hotels, casinos, and restaurants are the city’s main attraction, unlike other traditional holiday resorts with beaches or mountains. Plenty of exceptional and exclusive hotels in Las Vegas have a lot to offer even to the most sophisticated visitor. The famous dancing fountains and lush gardens can be found in the “Bellagio” hotel. “The Venetian” hotel is a small copy of the original Italian city’s canals and architecture. Volcano copy at the “Mirage Hotel” with its nightly eruption is a must-see show as well.

However, the city was not always the same as it is now. In 1895 Mormon Church members choose Las Vegas for building a fort between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, where they would travel to gather supplies.

As a city, Las Vegas was founded in 1905 and stretched across an area of 110 acres, which equals to about 445 000 square meters.

It became a popular railroad town and a stopover for travelers at the beginning of the 20th century. Later, in 1931 with the legalization of gambling and the construction of Hoover Dam, the city started developing as an entertainment center and experienced a population boom, with the peak of construction in 1940s. After World War II the city has finally become U.S. largest entertainment and gambling center (Levin, 2009).

The first hotel-casino on the so-called “Las Vegas Strip”, “El Rancho Vegas”, was opened in 1941 and worked for about 20 years until being destroyed by a fire. But it was not the very first casino in the Las Vegas area. The first one was called “Pair-o-Dice Club” and was built 10 years earlier, in 1931.

The 1st thing that comes into one’s mind with the word “Las Vegas” is of course the casinos. Gambling attracts people for many years in the hope to suddenly get rich and to get the most out of life. However, it is usually the casino that wins in the end. This happens because gambling business relies not only on the math and probability theory, but also on taking advantage of the human nature and psychology.

Casinos apply many secret psychological traps and catches in order to make the most of profit.  For example, there are no clocks or windows inside the casino, dealers and other employees do not wear watches either. The reason behind this is to make players forget about time and outside world in general and to make them concentrate on gambling.

Sound and light effects also play an important role in making a “zombie” of a player. “Bells ringing, siren-like lights flashing, change clanging, slot wheels whirring, digital sounds beeping – it’s all captivating”. All these effects are aimed to create an atmosphere of everlasting fest of winning, which appears to be only an illusion indeed.

Another trick is cozy, welcoming and comfortable feeling with the help of interior. Low lighting, bright carpets, warm colors, cleanliness – all is designed to make people feel themselves at home. Many people are attracted by free drinks that casino offers, and there are even greater opportunities with free shows tickets, meals, or even hotel stays, that one can hardly resist. All the generosity is aimed to make people spend more and more money at the casino and keep coming back to it over and over again.

Once someone is inside the casino, he/she is trapped in the labyrinth of the game tables and slot machines, all the service premises like restrooms, buffets and cash booths are intentionally hidden deeply inside.

Each casino is a well-designed business, and even if one gets small wins in the short run, the casino will get much more than that in the long run. “Some games are designed to give the player a false sense that they can beat a game and therefore will cause them to play longer”.

Those who were lucky to “catch a big fish” and to win decent amount of money, are treated by the casino as kings and queens. They are granted with free luxurious hotel suites and exclusive treatment – all is to make them staying inside the hotel or casino as long as possible, and to spend their prize on gambling or hotel entertainment.

Apart from the casinos Las Vegas is also known for its amazing musicals, cabaret shows and spectacular performances. Some of them are really exceptional, like “The House of Dancing Water” and “The Dream” at the “Le Reve Winn” hotel or “O”, “Zumanity” and five other shows by Cirque du Soleil. Las Vegas shows are exiting and exceptional indeed. Dancing, cabaret and musicals or stunts, acrobatics and special effects – “there truly is an event for every sensibility”. Neither London, nor Paris, nor New York can compete with Las Vegas in the number of spectacular shows and talented performers.

Top performers from almost every genre of music, comedy, and more do shows in Las Vegas. Some of the best world’s chefs and restaurants, those that can be seen in Paris, New York, Los Angeles and many other cities, are also present in Las Vegas.

Luxurious extravagant or classy hotels in Las Vegas offer a true indulgence for their visitors. Along with plenty of fine-dining options they are the reason enough to visit the city.

Sin City, as Las Vegas often being called, welcomes tourist all year round because of its favorable climate. It seems the city never sleeps as most of the entertainment spots work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

According to the U.S. Census, population of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Area was 1.9 million people in 2009. The city has the only county, which is Clark County.

Tourists from all over the world come to Vegas not only for its nightlife but also because of the unique ability to feel like in a number of the world’s best destinations at once. Architecture of each hotel makes it truly exclusive and altogether they create that exciting and glamorous image of a city as seen in movies and on the TV.

Special treatment and vacation packages, offered by luxurious “Bellagio”, “The Venetian” and other hotels are aimed at the high end segment. However, there is a plenty of hotel offers in Las Vegas for visitors with any expectations and income level.

Las Vegas hotels do not forget about local people as well and constantly offer them special deals and discounts on stays. It works as one of the most efficient types of advertisement – locals share their positive feedback with friends and relatives from other states and help to increase hotel’s profit.

The climate in Las Vegas is subtropical with only 4.2 inches of rain and almost 300 sunny days per year.

Many tourists, who choose between Las Vegas and other gambling and entertainment centers, often ask themselves if it is worth going to Vegas during summer heat or it would be better to enjoy the coastal scenery of Atlantic City. “If you want to experience Jersey, go to Atlantic City,” said Emily Whitaker, a California resident, who used to live in New Jersey area. “But if you want to experience the world, come to Vegas.”. Atlantic City has a lot to offer in terms of beautiful surroundings, sea breeze and landscape, but most of the visitors, who can compare these two cities, believe that the atmosphere of Las Vegas is unique and can’t be found anywhere else in the world. The only reason to choose Atlantic City over Vegas is an extremely hot weather in Vegas during summer. It is definitely not the best season to visit the city.

New Orleans with its nightlife also can’t compete with Vegas, neither can Macau in China, despite its fine dining, entertainment and gambling opportunities.

Hotels of Las Vegas, along with their casinos inside remain the main attraction of the city. “Caesars Palace” is an icon of the Sin City. Those who want to see Paris and the Eiffel Tower can try “Paris Las Vegas” hotel. As for the fans of Venice, there are gondolas and a St. Mark’s Square at “The Venetian” hotel.

There are two reasons to follow Las Vegas Boulevard South as far as Sahara Avenue. One is “Bonanza Gifts”, which is known as “world’s largest gift store”, and offers a pleasant ride back in time to the Route 66. There is also “Stratosphere”, the tallest building in Nevada, located north along the Boulevard. It has three thrill rides: “Big Shot”, “X Scream” and “Insanity: the Ride”.

Another reason to visit the city is its well-known wedding services. Weddings have never been that easy and full of fan as they are in Las Vegas.

Shopping in Las Vegas can be a good entertainment option as well. The most popular shopping place is the Forum Shops at “Caesars Palace”.

Those who want to chill out outside the casinos and restaurants are welcomed for the Las Vegas Springs Preserve, beautiful botanical gardens, nature trails and museum exhibits. The pool at the “Hard Rock Hotel” with its waterfall and sandy beaches makes it possible to cool after the midsummer heat. Spring Mountain and Red Rock Canyon areas, located in just 30 minutes driving distance from downtown Las Vegas have nice national parks that are worth visiting.

Possibly the best thing to do in Las Vegas is “Sky Combat Ace Las Vegas”, it is for those fans of airplane rides with crazy loops and plunges.   For those who prefer to keep their bodies closer to earth, there is Las Vegas “Motor Speedway”. One can go for a ride-along or do the driving himself. Do you love the lights of Las Vegas? Take a “Maverick Helicopter Tour” and enjoy a truly amazing night view on the Strip from above.

Overall, Las Vegas is an amazing place. It fully deserved to be called the “Mecca of fun” and the Entertainment Capital of the World. Sin City as it is often called has as many entertainment options to offer visitors of all ages and levels of income, as no other city in the world. “It has everything anyone could want in a holiday destination. Las Vegas has beautiful people, the world’s best entertainment, the most creative chefs, the best hotels, fun activities for the whole family, and the chance to become super-rich in an instant”.
