Penn State`s football problem was a scandal that took place at Pennsylvania State University. It was the worst scandal in the U.S. history of college sports, which is also known as the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal (Pope, 2012).
Jerry Sandusky was a university football defensive coordinator assistant at Penn State University for a long time, he was abused in 52 charges of child sexual harassment. According to the case examination, Sandusky was accused of child abuse dating back from 1994 till 2009 (Fischer, 2012). The trial of J. Sandusky started on June 11, 2012. The grand jury investigation of the case lasted for two years. Some high-level university authorities, like Joe Paterno, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz covered up the incident in order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, concealed the facts of Sundusky`s child abuse from the authorities (Emmert, 2012). They were charged with failing to report Sandusky`s crimes and lying to a grand jury. Due to the trial, Jerry Sandusky was condemned of sexual abuse that led to a sentence of 60 years. Since he is 67 years of age, it is a life sentence to him.
Penn State`s football problem is a real threat to the university, because it is impactful to the relationship between sport and law. Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal resulted in severe penalties, such as a $60 million fine, vacating of team`s victories during the period of 1998 to 2011 and a four-year postseason ban (Baratz, 2011). Penn State`s football problem badly affected the reputation of Penn State University and its football team.
The research asserts that football cannot be placed before education and breaking the law (McGuire, 2011). Children must be protected according to the law. The authorities have to keep under control their subordinates and do not cover up the incidents in order to avoid publicity.
