External Wellbeing

Physical Health

The growing gap between the biblical relationships with wealth, love for money and power continues to escalate in modern society. According to the New Testament, the church is a community of people united by people who are called to form one body. Physical health is important for the body – it is a sacred vessel that carries God’s spirit, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you … For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body” (1Cor. 6:19, 20). Physical health symbolizes the freedom within God’s sacred residence in the human body. Therefore, we must embody a system that adheres to the values embodied in all aspects of human life (Clarke 32). Physical health is critically important for a person to interact with others.

Relational Health

Believers should maintain a supportive attitude towards non-believers and remain tolerant of their way of life without blaming them. Romans 14:1-21 provides a guide for relations between different cultures and asserts for a restrained judgmental attitude. For example, Romans 14:5 says, “One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind.” The quote emphasizes that the concept of ideas is directed towards the Lord and should be accepted despite the difference. Likewise, In 3John 1:5-8, the Bible encourages us to testify our love by not accepting support from non-believers while assisting them to become members of truth in Christ. For example, 3John 1:6 says, “They have told the church about your love. Please send them on their way in a manner that honors God.” The quote asks for proper treatment of all people, because everyone worships the Lord. Relational health is about creating positive interactions bound in love.

Financial Health

The quest for financial success and material growth is important for every believer, as they all have responsibilities and even the Church needs money to support its activities. Church investments come from supporters who have supplied to enhance the ministry. As a result, Clarke encourages wealthy believers to support the church financially (44). Similarly, in Proverbs 3:9-10, the Bible encourages believers to honor the Lord with the first fruits of their harvest, and they will never lack. “Honor the LORD with your wealth, with the first fruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled to overflowing, and your vats will brim over with new wine.” The quotation encourages Christians to seek and create wealth that they should share with God and other people when they worship. Similarly, Christians are encouraged give generously alms, tithing, and offerings, “Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, so that there may be food in my house, and thus put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts; see if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you an overflowing blessing” (Malachi 3:10). Man can plant but the seasonal changes and other natural factors beyond the grasp of man cause market changes and such dynamics can result in huge losses. However, a person who understands God’s power and gives will reap more wealth. Financial health comes through giving and guarantees the body the freedom to find physical health and maintain good relationships with others.

Internal Wellbeing

Mental Health

A positive cognizance of the universe of mortal life creates an appealing internal well-being, which depends on the mental, emotional, and intellectual functioning. Mental well-being involves the cognitive ability to process ideas and focus on comprehending the knowledge of God. Solomon proclaims that obeying God and adhering to the laws creates a positive perspective of the mind, “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity” (Proverbs 3:1-2). The teaching emphasizes the positive influence of obeying the commandments by heart with a promise to prolong life full of peace and prosperity. A person who lives a prosperous life is psychologically free of self-condemnation, which is the main inhibitor that disturbs the mind and causes mental disorders (Berking and Whitley 5). Similarly, Proverbs 3:8 emphasizes living a worthwhile life free of evil before the Lord because that will lead to wellness, “This will bring health to your body and nourishment to your bones”. The quote assures Christians who hate evil live a sound mental health, because serving the Lord with a positive mentality creates peace of the mind.

Emotional Health

Emotional health is a psychological function that engages the proper expression of appropriate thoughts, feelings, and behavior both internally and externally (Pasadena Villa). 3John 1:11 asserts, “Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil but what is good. Anyone who does what is good is from God.” The reading indicates that emotional health relates to the positive psychological functioning, which allows an individual to express appropriate feelings. Evidence shows that the lack of emotional regulation leads to a negative impact on mental health (Berking and Whitley 6). Proper emotional functioning requires control of emotions such as worry, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6-7). The biblical quote shows God’s message that worrying results in poor emotional health, and asks believers to hope in the Creator’s ability to deliver in every emotional challenge.

Intellectual Health

Intellectual health refers to the capacity to engage in mental stimulating and creativity to achieve God’s full potential (University of California). God’s gifts in man are rewards that should be used for worshipping and increasing people’s awareness about the greater value of life, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Having knowledge helps man to overcome physical obstacles. Jesus grew in knowledge and increased his intellect to understand issues and matters that affected his generation, and, consequently, He provided solutions. Listening and mediating requires an open-mind and proper justice during judgment, therefore, all these depend on individual intellectual health (University of California). Therefore, intellectual wellness is built through cultural cooperation and involvements that increases awareness of personal talents.

Innermost Wellbeing

Eat the Word

The spiritual discipline of obedience refers to our willingness in submitting to the authority and Christ. Jesus told Satan during the great triumph that man could not live by bread alone, but for every word that proceeded from the mouth of God (Matthew 4:4). This insists that physical eating is important, but asserts that the greater is the spiritual nourishment attained from reading the Word as the food of the soul. Similarly, in Hebrews 5:12-14 believers are compared with infants dependent on milk and yet to understand the real word of God and experience it. For example, Hebrews 5:14 says, “But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” The verse compares a new believer with a child still using milk, but people have understood the Word of God as mature because they shun evil.

Exercise the Spiritual Discipline

Similarly, through self-denial, we learn that happiness does not depend on achievement of all our material desires. 1 Timothy 4:8 proclaims, “For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come”. The quote insists on training for the achievement of godliness, which is better than physical exercises. Spiritual exercises increase individual worth and give a person a chance to express internal potential in the world. The passage in 1 Timothy 4:13-14 expounds the forms of exercises that include devotion, reading scriptures, exercising gifts of prophecy and preaching, which increase the potential of achieving godliness.

Everyday Application

Submission in respect and obedience enables believers to implement the Word in their innermost selves where the Spirit of Jesus lives. James 1:22 asserts, “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says.” The quote requires believers to implement the Word in their innermost lives and improve daily journey in order to achieve godliness. Everyday application of the internal wellbeing to achieve spiritual development requires testimonies, “It gave me great joy when some believers came and testified about your faithfulness to the truth, telling how you continue to walk in it” (3 John 1:3-4). The quote states that godliness is an internal calling that an individual can access by practicing the teachings of the scriptures. Likewise, Matthew 7:24 says, “Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock”. The quote emphasizes creating a strong foundation through the appliance of the Word.

Conclusion

The external, internal and innermost wellbeing affects an individual’s state of health. People need physical health and finances, mental satisfaction, emotional well-being, and intellectual health so that they can experience a positive awareness of the innermost spiritual satisfaction. God tests people to tithe in return for physical wealth and prosperity that comes from nature that under the guidance and control of heavenly power. Similarly, emotional, mental and intellectual health is a state of cognitive and psychological stability for engaging in good actions and thoughts that create blessings. Spiritual wellness and sanctification are enhanced by the work God’s grace, which transforms and renews our minds form the past into an expression of behaviors an attitude of Christlikeness.
