Cell biology can also be termed as cytology. The word cytology is derived from the Greek word kitos (cytos) meaning an empty vessel or a compartment, and logus meaning to discover or study. Hence, cytology literally refers to a branch of biology, which studies different aspects of cells such as study of the phenomenon of heredity, variation, nutrition, metabolism, and the growth and reproduction of a cell. Depending on the organization, cells basically are of two types: prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (Budavari, 1989). Prokaryotic cells are a primitive type of cells that lack a true nucleus and other cell organelles such as mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi complex, and chloroplasts. Eukaryotic cells have a true nucleus and also contain cell organelles (Dethier, 1963). In this experiment, we tested the different rates of absorbance at different concentrations of Nacl, and determined that there was an increase in the rate of absorbance, as the rate of concentration decreased.

Methods

We measured the different rates of absorbance of 520nm as the concentration of Nacl decreased. Then, we tested the absorbance rate against concentration and marked a positive increase in the absorbance rate further affirming our values from Foundations of Systems Biology (Biology Department, 2000)

There was an evident increase in the rate of absorbance of 520nm as the concentration of Nacl decreased.

Discussion

The increase in rate of absorbance as Nacl concentration decreased is due to the ability of cells to survive in lower concentrations of the solution. Higher concentration of Nacl would lead to denaturation of the cells present and cause them to shrivel; hence, the poor absorbance rate of 520nm was recorded in higher concentrations of Nacl.
