Since the introduction of internet in 1990, a lot is happening in the world of technology. The first internet application was web 1.0 followed by web 2.0 in 2000 (O’Reilly, 2007). The two paradigms have certain difference among them. According to Tim O’Reilly, web 1.0 was applicable to experts (O’Reilly, 2007). In this case, only those who knew about programming could create a website or blog. On the contrary, web 2.0 is applicable to people who do not know about programming. Secondly, web 1.0 is for consumers of information while web 2.0 is for people to feed and consume information. In this case, O’Reilly simply states that web 1.0 did not have the ability to share information (O’Reilly, 2007). On the other hand, web 2.0 is like a social site or a collaborative media where organizations are marketing their products while people interact.

In the case of Google and Netscape, Google was able to prosper with the new internet changes while Netscape was failing. In this situation, Netscape was concentrating, on building software, to distribute to the end users while Google was concentrating on providing a page full of links web page authors make (Openstech, 2007). Therefore, with the introduction of the web 2.0, Google became successful because it was offering services to users who were paying directly or indirectly. On the contrary, Netscape was offering products (Openstech, 2007). Additionally, it was cheaper to use Google than to buy Netscape software. As a result, Netscape failed while Google was becoming successful.

Therefore, other companies who are using the internet to succeed like Google, they need to consider various strategies. First, they should consider using internet as a marketing tool because it is cheap and information is viral (Openstech, 2007). Secondly, they should not concentrate on creating software for their users (O’Reilly, 2007). Instead, they should create a forum for sharing information and interacting with the users. Henceforth, using these strategies, they are going to prosper.
