The Beatles were an English Rock band formed in 1960 which gained their popularity in 1962 while playing in the Liverpool clubs. The group’s line up consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. The Beatles were much enjoyed by publicity till 1970s when the band decided to break up.

The Beatles’ break up

There was so much hype and rumors of who was to be blamed for the Beatles’ break up. Most of the public blamed Yoko Ono, Lennon’s second wife, for the break up but Paul McCartney came out strongly defending her saying “She certainly didn’t break the group up. The group was breaking, when Yoko came along, part of her attraction was her avant garde side, her view of things, so she showed him another way to be, so it was time for John to leave, he was going to leave one way or another (Jordan, 2012)” Yoko Ono on the other hand blamed Paul’s controlling hand as the major reason relating to the Beatles’ brake up.

Thesis Statement

Only two guys are left from the initial Beatles’ group – Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, who took on a solo career after the Beatle’s break up and somehow they have been successful in their solo career paths over 30 years down the line.

Paul McCartney

Paul was a lead singer in the Beatles band along with John Lennon. Yoko Ono, Lennon’s widow, blamed Paul for the Beatles’ break up since he was the only one trying to hold the group together and everyone else wanted to leave because of his controlling hand.

Music career

After the break up, Paul continued to sing Pop Music both Solo and in collaboration with other bands, especially with the Wings Band which was active between 1971 and 1981; he also did a few classical music hits.  McCartney has released 22 studio pop albums and five classical albums which are believed to be worth $800 Million today. It is also believed to be the most successful Beatles member since he maintained constant presence in British as well as American Charts.

Ringo Starr

Ringo was the drummer for the Beatles band, he also sang and wrote some of the band’s songs and is known as an easy going person. However, his songwriting talents were not acknowledged as widely as Lennon’s and McCartney’s talents. He was the least prominent member of the group and he occasionally showed his prowess when it came to singing. After the break up, he pursued a solo musical career that saw him released a pre-rock standard album and a second one which mostly consisted of country music collections. In 1989, he joined the “All Star Band” alongside high profile musicians such as Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren and Levon Helm In 1992 he released a solo album and has been on the charts ever since. He is also an actor, director and a writer.

Why they should not have retired with the rest of the Band members

While the other band members decided to retire, McCartney and Ringo continued with their music and did make a good career move. Since then they have been souring to greater heights with their music and tours all over the world. They are still recognized as great and legendary musicians and even in their 70s, they are still sensational and influential.

Their Touring

Ringo Starr formed the All Star Band and their first incarnation tour was a huge success. He went on multiple tours with them over the two decades and in 2008 he toured again with his tenth All star ensemble.

Paul McCartney has gone a number of tours in his musical career. He toured with the Wings as well as his own Solo tours in the 1990s. He still has tours up to date and some of them are scheduled for this year, 2013.

Should a musician ever retire?

Musicians shouldn’t retire at all, or they should do so if only they are prohibited by health reasons or old age. Being an artist is supposed to be a calling rather than just a mere vocation. A musician’s career is his/her identity and there is nothing they’ll rather do but just sing. I believe that a musician’s skills and prowess improve with time and retirement should not be an option.

Has their style changed since the Beatle’s days?

Yes, their style has changed tremendously. During the Beatles’ days, most of their songs were popular and rock music oriented. A different touch and style in music was highly visible in the last album that the Beatles did. White Album consisted of music from various genres. Paul McCartney, for example, went on to do classical music though he still maintained pop music as a part of his music genres. Ringo Starr, on the other hand, went on to do Country music, Rock and a little bit of Pop music.

Conclusion

The Beatles were a sensational group till the 70s when they broke up and the band members took on solo music careers. Two of the band members, Paul and Ringo, are the only surviving members of the group. When they started, their albums didn’t do quite well while as their Band albums but eventually they broke through the music scene in both the British and American charts. They made a good career move not to retire with the rest of the members as they are currently enjoying thriving careers with Paul believed to be the most successful of them all.
